Leader in Medicine

Alexandra Carrer

The American Health Council welcomed Alexandra Carrer, BA, BS, MD as “Best in Medicine” for her outstanding contributions to the medical field. An orthopaedic spine surgeon at Premier Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Teaneck, N.J., Dr. Carrer performs intricate surgical procedures and provides optimal patient care. While she has held her current role for nearly two years, she has spent over 16 years in the healthcare industry expanding her skills and knowledge in orthopaedic and spine surgery.

Dr. Carrer’s interest in orthopaedic surgery began at a young age after sustaining sports-related injuries as an athlete and martial artist. Her participation in both sports gave her an insight as to the importance of the rehabilitative process after surgical procedures and alternative ways to treat conditions. Her maternal grandmother further influenced Dr. Carrer to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery as she suffered from severe scoliosis throughout most of her life. She eventually enrolled at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and earned a medical degree in 2006. She completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the medical center and later, a spine fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.

At Premier Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Carrer performs patient evaluations, scientific measurements, physical therapies, injections and resident education. Additionally, she performs orthopaedic procedures at a Level I trauma center. Throughout her successful career, Dr. Carrer has published several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as delivered speeches and presentations at international conferences. To contribute her knowledge as well as remain updated on medical trends, Dr. Carrer is a member of several professional associations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, AOSpine (an international community of spine surgeons), the Society of Lateral Access Surgery and the New York County Medical Society. Additionally, she contributes funds to various charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross, the ASPCA and Save the Children.

In her free time, she enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle by surfing, snowboarding, ballroom dancing and practicing martial arts. She enjoys going to the cinema, reading literature, visiting the opera house and traveling. She devotes her personal time to advancing healthcare development and access in underserved areas and developing countries. Dr. Carrer is fluent in Spanish and French, and conversational in Italian. With a successful career at hand — one that she attributes to her compassion, perseverance, humility and honesty — Dr. Carrer plans to continue to build excellent orthopaedic and spine care in New Jersey and New York.
