Leader in Medicine

Alf H. Bergman

MD

The American Health Council recently appointed Alf Bergman, MD to its Board of Physicians for his outstanding contributions to the medical field. A medical director at Beacon Health, a Community Mental Health Center, and owner of Ohio Psychiatry Specialists, LLC in Independence, Ohio, Dr. Bergman provides high-quality care to improve his patients’ mental health. While he has held his current role for over four years, he has spent the last 12 years in the healthcare industry expanding his skills and knowledge in general psychiatry, treatment-resistant depression, treatment of depression with transcranial magnetic stimulation, teaching evidence-based practice and medical administration and teaching.

Dr. Bergman has always been intrigued and fascinated with the human brain. That, coupled with his passion and desire to help others, led him to seek a profession in mental health. After earning a medical degree from Sint Eustatius School of Medicine in 2001, he completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Connecticut — where he also served as the chief resident — in 2005. Board certified in psychiatry and neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he practiced psychiatry in Maine until 2009, and later accepted a position at SUMMA Health System in Akron, Ohio. For four years, he assumed a leadership role as the medical director for the Psychiatric Resident Training Clinic, and supervised internal medicine and family practice physicians in training. He taught seminars, provided inpatient and outpatient care and treated patients at the SUMMA Center for sexual health.

By 2013, he joined Parma Community General Hospital and simultaneously founded his practice, Ohio Psychiatry Specialists, LLC, which aims to support patients so they may reach their optimal physical and mental health. Additionally, Dr. Bergman provides psychiatric services to residents in assisted living facilities, group homes and nursing homes, as well as performs evaluations and treatments of patients connected to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. He is dedicated to educating his patients about their diagnosis and teaches psychiatry to nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Dr. Bergman is a member of the Swedish Psychiatric Association, the Leading Physicians of the World and the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Association. He has spoken at several National Alliance on Mental Illnessconferences on topics like depression, transcranial magnetic stimulation, evidence-based medicine and delirium. He has also lent his services to athletes and teams, and enjoys working closely with them to provide sport psychiatry. In his free time, he enjoys coaching and playing soccer, as well as training dogs.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Berman is most proud of his transcranial magnetic stimulation training and his continued contribution to teaching mental health providers of all levels. He attributes his success to his work ethic and outstanding training and mentorship. He plans to continue to excel in his career by making transcranial magnetic stimulation available for all patients.
