Dr. Andrew Shaffer has been appointed as “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council. The esteemed professional is a highly renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery.
Dr. Shaffer initially studied for his MS at North Dakota State University, Department of Polymers and Coatings and Department of Chemistry, Fargo. However, keen to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Shaffer then went on to gain his MD at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, in 2004. Following this, Dr. Drew obtained Residency at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Royal Oak, Michigan and his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship, from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
From a young age, Dr. Shaffer always dreamed of becoming a doctor. His goal is to provide and improve world class cardiovascular surgical care with a compassionate patient focused team, outstanding operative facilities, and clinically pertinent research efforts. Dr. Shaffer has enjoyed a successful ten year career to date and he attributes his achievements to his hard work and the constant support from his family.
Dr. Shaffer has undertaken the role of Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Assistant Professor for the last four months, at the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery. His expertise includes Adult Cardiac Surgery, Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Aortic Surgery, Mechanical Circulatory Support, Heart and Lung Transplantation and TAVR and TEVAR. Dr. Staffer enjoys a substantial amount of responsibility in his current role as a surgeon. In addition to his surgical responsibilities, other tasks include rounding off the ICU, and educating his patients and their families. He is also an Undergraduate and Medical Student mentor which requires him to pass on his knowledge to the future surgeons.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shaffer has been awarded and acknowledged for a number of professional accomplishments. In 2012, he received a First Battalion Army Medal of Recognition Royal Oak, MI. One personal accomplishment that Dr. Shaffer is proud of, is conducting research on the mechanical circulatory system.
To share and expand his knowledge, Dr. Shaffer is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery Residents Association and C. Walton and Richard Surgical Society.
Looking into the future, Dr. Shaffer plans on the continuation of adding programs to the current practice. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and running.
