Dr. Terrie Inder has has been honored by the American Health Council as “Best in Medicine.” Currently, Dr. Inder is Chair of Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA – a role she has held for the past 5 years.

Her family doctor from her childhood was her source of inspiration for pursuing a career in the medical field. Dr. Inder graduated from Otago Medical School in 1988 and in 1992, gained specialist knowledge in pediatrics from Dunedin Hospital. In 1996, at Christchurch Hospital, she gained a fellowship in Neonatal and was chief pediatric resident. Furthermore, she gained even further specialist knowledge in child neurology from Boston Children’s Hospital in 2000. Both her qualifications and her experience have allowed her to specialize in studying the newborn brain.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston has always been at the forefront of innovation on a global stage, providing care and facilitating cutting-edge research. BWH is also proud to be a key teaching hospital for the highly acclaimed Harvard Medical School. Brigham and Women’s Health Care is the parent corporation for Brigham and Women’s Hospital as well as Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization. Patients in 120 different countries as well as those from across the United States are served alongside patients in the New England area. For BWH, their specialties lie in orthopedics, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, cancer, rheumatology, gynecology as well as pioneering research. For Dr. Inder specifically, her role has a dual purpose. As Department Chair, Dr Inder assists with hospital administrative and hospital responsibilities in addition to her roles in Newborn Medicine. Alongside this, Dr. Inder is heavily involved with innovative research and compassionate care in the Neonatal Unit. She is responsible for leading the physician team inspiring the best care possible for high risk infants.

Dr. Inder has achieved a number of impressive accolades throughout her career, including having over 200 peer-reviewed articles published. In addition, she has co-published a university-level textbook concerning the Neurology of the Newborn Brain. Her previous role as Director of Washington University Intellectual and Developmental and Disabilities Research Center (WUIDDRC) also allowed her to gain further knowledge and refine her skills as the center is integral to supporting children with developmental disabilities. Dr. Inder is passionate about supporting the next generation and she holds the prestigious Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award which helps her achieve this goal. She is also a member of SPR and APS and proud that she has played such a vital role in both the care of newborn babies with Cerebral Palsy and research into their condition. Dr. Inder’s credits her successes to her ingrained passion for her profession.

In her spare time, Dr. Inder goes to spinning classes, but also loves gardening and cooking. Most of all, she loves being a mom to her children. She is actively involved with charitable organizations such as Square Root Pregnancy Foundation.

In the next five years, Dr. Inder wants to continue to gain evidence of how to deliver the highest quality system of care for premature babies. She also wants to support the development of junior scientists and their subsequent careers to lead on for the future of her field.
