Howard Aronow, MD has been warmly welcomed as “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council for his contributions to the medical field. An associate professor in clinical neurology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Dr. Howard A. Aronow teaches general neurology to medical students and consults with patients who experience chronic pain, headaches and other neurological conditions. Since entering the healthcare industry nearly 30 years ago, Dr. Aronow has garnered comprehensive skills and knowledge in medicine and HIV/AIDS neurology and research and has delivered high-quality patient care.

After his great aunt was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and his grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, Dr. Aronow decided to pursue a career in the medical field. He earned a medical degree from the Universidad Del Noreste in 1981. After graduating from medical school at the height of the HIV epidemic, Dr. Aronow dedicated his time to treating people diagnosed with the virus. Fascinated with neurology, he completed a neurology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in neuro-virology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer in New York City.

After completing a rigorous academic training, Dr. Aronow continued his work in the HIV neurology field. He served as the first medical director of the HIV Health Care Center, now known as the Jeffrey Goodman Special Clinic, at the LA Gay & Lesbian Center. He spent a large portion of his career researching, educating and providing neurological care for patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In addition to his associate professor role, Dr. Aronow currently serves as the co-investigator on various studies researching neurological effects of HIV on different populations. He also serves as an attending neurologist at the HIV Outpatient Clinic of the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center and is the only attending physician on the Los Angeles HIV Legal Services Advisory Panel.

Moreover, in addition to extensive clinical experience, Dr. Aronow has expertise in the field of neurological HIV/AIDS research, and is the co-investigator on numerous studies researching the neurological effects of HIV on various populations, resulting in publications including “Effects of Coinfection with HIV and Hepatitis C Virus on the Nervous System.” He was also a researcher for the Bronx Aging and Dementia Study and the country’s first AIDS Clinical Trials Group.

Dr. Aronow is a member of various professional associations, including the American Academy of Neurology. He has served on the board of various organizations including the Center for Health Justice, Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services and Jewish AIDS Services. Additionally, he contributes time and funds to Congregation Koi Ami and serves on its board.

In his free time, Dr. Aronow enjoys attending musicals, reading modern literature and going to the theater. As a longtime HIV survivor himself, Dr. Aronow dedicates his career to advancing treatments for others diagnosed with the virus. He has developed a meaningful understanding of the emotional and medical challenges this specific affected population endures. With a successful career at hand — one that he attributes to his sense of purpose — Dr. Aronow eventually plans to retire and begin a new chapter of his life.
