The American Health Council has warmly welcomed Dr. John Mackey, M.D., as “Best in Medicine.” Having amassed over 42 years within the healthcare industry, Dr. Mackey, from Eugene, Oregon, is renowned for his expertise in the areas of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Dr. Mackey’s academic achievements began at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson – Medical School, where he attained his MD in 1975. This was furthered with an Internship, Transitional Year, at Scripps Mercy Hospital. In addition to his studies, Dr. Mackey also became Certified in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and is a Certified Wound Care Specialist.

Focusing his work on Emergency Medicine, Wound Specialties and Hyperbaric Medicine, Dr. Mackey has spent the past 8 years in the position of Medical Director at Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services.

After practicing Emergency Medicine for over 30 years, Dr. Mackey was asked by McKenzie Willamette Medical Center to help develop an advanced wound care/hyperbaric medicine unit in conjunction with Healogics Wound Care centers. It was felt that with Dr. Mackey’s excellent reputation in the medical community along with his experience as an avid SCUBA diver, he would be a good choice to become the Unit’s first Medical Director in 2009.

Headquartered in Jacksonville, Healogics and its affiliated companies manage a nationwide network of Wound Care Centers® and saw over 300,000 new patients in 2016 through a connected network of partner hospitals and Wound Care Centers, academic medical centers, and other post‐acute sites. Healogics utilizes an evidence‐based, systematic approach to chronic wound healing to treat an under-served and growing patient population.

On a day to day basis, Dr. Mackey sees patients in the clinic, and oversees quality of care. The clinic has a 92% success rate in healing chronic non-healing wounds by applying the 9 fundamental steps of wound healing, as identified by the Healogics company.

Reflecting on his career to date, Dr. Mackey attributes his success to being detail oriented, and to the support of his family. Dr. Mackey quotes Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” His personal achievements include his marriage to his wife, Jan, who is a Registered Nurse, as well as raising his five children.

As a recipient of America’s Top Physicians Award in 2005, the esteemed doctor is honored to have been published in Consumer Research Council of America. He also remains affiliated with The Association for the Advancement of Wound Care, The Wound Healing Society, The American College of Emergency Medicine, and The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).

Dr. Mackey’s goals within the next 5 years include continued growth within his field, educating others, and the prolongation of wound research.

When not busy working, Dr. Mackey enjoys boating, fly fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He maintains a keen interest in wood and metal working, and supports multiple charitable organizations including Project Hope and the Regional Wound Care Consortium.
