The American Health Council has warmly welcomed Dr. Joy Awoniyi, PharmD, as “Best in Medicine.” Only a short while into her career, Dr. Awoniyi has already been recognized for her contributions to Clinical Pharmacy during the past 6 years.
Dr. Awoniyi’s interest in the healthcare profession began during her childhood, growing up with the influence of her father who was an anesthesiologist. It was his encouragement and her desire to find a career which enabled her to help people which naturally lead her to healthcare.
Dr. Awoniyi focused her studies in medicine and after years of study attained her PharmD, Doctorate in Pharmacy, graduating from Florida A & M University in 2012. Following on from Dr. Awoniyi’s academic accomplishments, she then had the opportunity to complete extensive training as a Pharmacy Practice Resident from 2012-13 and as a Psychiatric Pharmacy Resident from 2013-14.
In her current capacity, Dr. Awoniyi has fulfilled the role of Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs for the past 5 years. Displaying expertise in Psychiatry & Mental Health, Dr. Awoniyi is responsible for inpatient care at the VA. As part of this role she also oversees the mental health clinic, managing all mid-level practitioners and works with medication management. Dr. Awoniyi strives to go above and beyond the call of duty, having even been known to FaceTime her patients.

Looking back at her success to date, Dr. Awoniyi is thankful of her experiences during her Residency, emphasizing the importance of the mentors she had the pleasure to work with and who shaped her into the health professional she is today. Dr. Awoniyi is also privileged to have earned the opportunity to work within the VA, learning a great deal through the interdisciplinary environment.
In her short time working in the healthcare industry, Dr. Awoniyi is proud of her achievements precepting students, with her goal being to promote the benefits of Pharmacy Residency placements.
In a continuous effort to broaden her knowledge, Dr. Awoniyi maintains membership with several professional associations including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Pharmacist Association, the Florida Pharmacy Association and the Dade County Pharmacy Association.
Looking to the future, Dr. Awoniyi aspires to return to her studies to become Board Certified and aims for her work on the interventions as pharmacists to be published.
In her time away from work, Dr. Awoniyi enjoys supporting charities, in particular Hope for Humanity Worldwide Inc.
