Michael Sabia

Dr. Michael Sabia has been honored by the American Health Council as “Best in Medicine.” Dr. Sabia has gained an exceptional amount of experience within the healthcare industry throughout his 14 year long career.

Dr. Sabia has been interested in medicine since a young age, due to his passion for the life sciences including anatomy and biology. Additionally, his desire and drive to save the lives of others and alleviate suffering contributed greatly to him pursuing a career within the medical sector.

Pursuing his dream, Dr. Sabia went on to study for his Medical Doctorate at New York Medical College, graduating in 2003. After graduating from New York Medical College, Dr. Sabia completed his residency in anesthesiology at Cooper University Hospital, Camden, NJ. He then completed his fellowship in pain medicine from Beth Israel Medical Center, New York

Dr. Sabia is currently working at Cooper University Hospital as Division Head and Pain Medicine Fellowship Director and is an expert in pain medicine and anesthesiology. He treats all types of pain but focuses on lower back pain, spinal cord stimulation, post laminectomy syndrome and radiofrequency ablation. The University hospital is distinguished by the motto “to serve, to heal, to educate,” and Cooper University Health Care has maintained its reputation as a leading health system in South Jersey since 1887. Cooper University Health Care system is composed of an academic, tertiary (specialist) care hospital; a leading cancer center; a children’s hospital; three urgent care centers; and more than 100 outpatient offices throughout South Jersey and Pennsylvania. Located in Camden, New Jersey, Cooper University Hospital is an academic, tertiary-care medical center affiliated with Cooper Medical School of Rowan University serving as the only Level 1 trauma center for adults and children in southern New Jersey. In regards to Dr. Sabia’s role as Division Head and Pain Medicine Fellowship Director, he has a broad range of responsibilities on a daily basis. These include the duties that come with being the director of the fellowship program, overseeing students as an assistant professor of anesthesiology, running the division of pain medicine, and managing the physicians, nurses, and residents at the hospital.

Dr. Sabia has had a prosperous 14 year career and he credits this success to internal hunger and perseverance. Regarding professional accomplishments, Dr. Sabia is proud to serve on the Board of Directors for The American Pain Association, and the editorial boards of the Journal of Pain Management and the Journal of Palliative Care and Medicine. Dr. Sabia is pleased with his several peer-reviewed publications on topics including ketamine, advances in translational neuropathic research, deep cervical plexus block, changes to the field of pain medicine and much more. Fortunately his hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed within the health industry, as he has received a variety of awards and honors: these include South Jersey Magazine Top Physicians: 2012, 2013, 2014, Top Docs, South Jersey Magazine: 2012, 2013, 2014, Resident of the Quarter, Cooper University Hospital, The Marion Skriloff Scholarship Fund of the Rebekah State Assembly of NJ and Medtronic Fellowship Award, Beth Israel Medical Center.

To ensure he stays at the forefront of his expertise, Dr. Sabia is a member of a variety of professional associations including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, New Jersey Society of Anesthesiologists, American Academy of Pain Medicine, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Camden County Medical Society, Beta Beta Honorary Society, Society of Academic Anesthesiology Associations, Medical Society of New Jersey and The American Pain Association.

He started an ACGME accredited Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship Program at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and is very involved with teaching at the medical school and serves as the chair of the nominations and elections committee.

In addition, Dr. Sabia currently serves as a co-investigator for “Ketamine and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy in treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Comparison of treatment efficacy and metabolic profiles.” Prior to this, he was a principal investigator for, “A Randomized, Double-blond, Double-dummy, Placebo-controlled, Active-controlled, Parallel-group, Multicenter Trial of Oxycodone/Naloxone Controlled-release Tablets (OXN) to Assess the Analgesia Efficacy (Compared to Placebo) and the Management of Opioid-induce Constipation (Compared to Oxycodone Con).”

Looking into the future, Dr. Sabia will continue to publish medical journals. When he is not working, Dr. Sabia enjoys yoga and generalized health and fitness in his free time.
