Rene Przkora

MD, PhD

The American Health Council has cordially appointed Dr. Rene Przkora, MD, PhD, as “Best in Medicine.” Dr. Przkora has been recognized for his expertise in the specialist field of Chronic Pain, having amassed over 18 years of experience.

Dr. Przkora first became involved in his profession due to an ongoing desire to improve patient care, combined with his ability to balance being a clinician, an educator and researcher. With this is mind, Dr. Przkora focused his studies in medicine, first receiving his MD from the University of Wurzburg in 1999 and shortly after attaining his PhD from the University of Bonn in 2000.

Dr. Przkora gained a wealth of experience during his studies including intern and resident physician positions in Surgery at the University of Regensburg Medical Center, Regensburg, Germany, Orthopedic Trauma Surgery at the Medical University of Hannover, Hannover, Germany, and Orthopedic Trauma Surgery at the Charite University Hospital, Berlin, Germany, a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2006, Galveston, a Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville and a Fellowship in Pain Medicine in 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital – Harvard Medical School Boston. Dr. Przkora is board-certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

In his current capacity, Dr. Przkora fulfills the role of Division Chief of the Pain Medicine Division at the University of Florida (UF) Department of Anesthesiology, a position he has upheld for the past 3 years. Displaying expertise in medicine, anesthesiology, pain medicine, anesthesiology education and functional outcomes, Dr. Przkora’s daily responsibilities include duties as the program director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship Program, overseeing resident and fellows as Professor of Anesthesiology, running the pain medicine division, and conducting research. He also holds the accomplishments of serving as the Assistant Program Director of the Anesthesiology Core Residency at UF. Dr. Przkora serves as the President-elect of the Association of Pain Program Directors, representing the pain medicine fellowship training programs of the nation.

Located in Gainesville, Florida, the University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology prides itself in providing an environment that prepares the next generation of leaders through excellent education and clinical care, and innovative research. The UF Department of Anesthesiology works closely with UF Health Shands Hospital and several local facilities to provide anesthesiology, pain, and critical care medicine needs of all patients. UF Department of Anesthesiology offers a four-year residency in addition to welcoming fellows in one and two-year training programs in specialties ranging from acute pain medicine, pain medicine, critical care, cardiac and pediatric anesthesia, and many more.

Amongst his many professional accolades, Dr. Przkora has been privileged to have published several peer-reviewed articles and obtained independent research funding including funding at the federal level for pain medicine.

Looking back at his illustrious career to date, Dr. Przkora is proud of his to have been awarded a Certificate in Business Administration from the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 2013 and to serve as a patient advocate and a junior editor for the American Board of Anesthesiology as well as editor for leading pain medicine publications such as Pain Physician. In reflection of these achievements alongside his impressive medical and academic background, Dr. Przkora attributes his success to his perseverance and openness.

In a continuous effort to broaden his knowledge and stay ahead in his field, Dr. Przkora maintains membership with numerous professional associations including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

Looking to the future, Dr. Przkora aims to develop and transition into a role that combines hospital and ambulatory pain services. In his time outside of work, Dr. Przkora enjoys to keep active by participating in sports and kayaking and enjoying time with his family.
