The American Health Council has warmly welcomed Richard R. Hill, MD, PhD, as “Best in Medicine.” With over 20 years of experience in adult pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, addiction and community psychiatry, as well as significant investment of time training/mentoring medical students and residents, Dr. Richard Hill demonstrates a strong commitment to his patients with a focus on delivering compassionate, high quality clinical care and has proven to be a renowned and highly respected member of the medical community. He currently practices both in Pepper Pike Ohio — where he runs a Private Practice (Richard R. Hill MD PhD Inc., www.richardrhillmdphd.com) — and on the near west side of Cleveland, where he serves as the Staff Psychiatrist for Neighborhood Family Practice (NFP). NFP is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, nationally recognized for delivering high quality healthcare and for developing innovative, cutting-edge healthcare delivery models. Dr. Hill works closely with NFP Primary Care Physicians to develop and deliver integrated behavioral health and primary care services for their shared patients.
Before joining NFP and starting his own Private Practice, Dr. Hill was Medical Director for both Ravenwood Mental Health Center in Chardon, Ohio and for Recovery Resources in Cleveland, Ohio (1996-2006). He was named Chief Medical Officer at Recovery Resources from 2007-2012. While Medical Director at both Mental Health facilities, Dr. Hill oversaw the training of Psychiatry Residents from the University Hospitals of Cleveland and from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation who rotated through each agency for their outpatient Community Psychiatry training. Dr. Hill was also Chief Clinical Officer for Geauga County, Ohio (1996-2006). He remains an adjunct faculty member at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) where he is a Senior Clinical Instructor (1997-present) and maintains Associate Status with clinical privileges at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation-Lutheran Hospital.
Dr. Hill believes his success as a clinician is the result of his strong basic science training, the excellent training and experience he received as a Resident in Psychiatry at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, his strong work ethic and determination to succeed, and the encouragement and optimism provided to him by his parents. After completing undergraduate majors in biology and chemistry, Dr. Hill completed a Master’s Degree in Physiology at The University of Akron before entering Graduate School at CWRU where he received a PhD in Neuroscience in 1989.
Dr. Hill explains that as a graduate student in the Neurosciences at CWRU, he was responsible for setting up and proctoring the brain neuroanatomy exams for the medical students. It was through his many interactions with the medical students that he realized he was more interested in the clinical application of scientific advances than in basic science benchwork. He then entered medical school at CWRU and completed his MD in 1992. However, Dr. Hill believes that the training he received in Graduate School-where he learned the importance of solid scientific method and research design along with the ability to objectively and critically read a basic science or clinical journal article with an eye towards study design, has proven invaluable for his clinical career.
As Dr. Hill became more recognized for his clinical expertise and for the teaching/mentoring work he has done, additional professional opportunities became available. Dr. Hill has spoken at many academic and professional venues and has authored and co-authored many clinical publications, as well as a book chapter in his field. He also served as the Program Director for two separate grant funded initiatives directed toward the integration of behavioral health and primary care medicine. Dr. Hill also participated in a Romanian-American partnership to enhance addiction services in Romania. This involved traveling abroad to help establish chemical dependency treatment programs for the residents of Sibiu, Romania.
Dr. Hill’s is a member of the American Psychiatric Association (since 1997), the Ohio Psychiatric Association (since 1997), the Cleveland Psychiatric Association (since 1997), he is certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (since 2000), he is a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (since 2010), medical review officer in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (since 2000), and is a member of the Medical Advisory Board-National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the Cuyahoga County chapter. Dr. Hill was named to “Americas Best Psychiatrists” list in 2004.
Dr. Hill stays abreast of advancements in his field so that he may provide the most up to date, clinically relevant and effective care possible. Dr. Hill also understands that a strong positive doctor-patient relationship is key to a positive clinical outcome-and so remains vigilant about listening to his patients carefully, spending the time necessary to understand the patient’s unique life circumstance as this may profoundly impact the presentation, response to treatment and clinical course of their illness. While in residency training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dr. Hill received additional training by psychiatrists with extensive training and experience in psychotherapy in order to advance his skills in this area. Therefore, in addition to providing medication management for his patients, Dr. Hill also provides individual psychotherapy and couples therapy when indicated.
When Dr. Hill is not at either of his offices, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, engaging in various physical fitness activities such as exercising/working out at the gym, bike riding, or working in the yard or on his century-old house.
