The American Health Council has awarded Dr. Stuart Lee Kaplan its prestigious “Best in Medicine” honor. Working in the healthcare industry for over 50 years, Dr. Kaplan is an expert in the field of child psychiatry and continues to practice and teach in the field.
Dr. Kaplan attended George Washington University School of Medicine, where he completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1965. Following this, he went on to complete a residency in Adult Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and a residency in Child Psychiatry at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Kaplan has worked tirelessly in all phases of academic and clinical psychiatry; he has served as the director of an innovative inpatient and outpatient child psychiatric service spanning 7 counties in New York State. He has served as the Residency Training Director and Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at two major medical schools. He was awarded the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) “St. Louis Mental Health Professional of the Year” award in 1995. He has served as Full Professor of Psychiatry, and promoted to University Professor of Psychiatry, at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey Medical Center.
Dr. Kaplan has initiated clinical trials and other research programs to provide highest quality innovative treatments for his child patients. He has pioneered family therapy programs that help children and families recover more quickly, leave hospital settings sooner, and more successfully reintegrate into the community.
Dr. Kaplan has been a prolific contributor to the scientific literature and has published dozens of papers in scientific journals. He wrote a highly influential book for the lay public and clinicians entitled, “Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder.” The book was written during the time when this disorder was widely overdiagnosed. Dr. Kaplan authored a cover story for Newsweek magazine entitled, “Mommy, Am I Really Bipolar?” His work has helped countless families to better understand the diagnosis and its alternatives.
Dr. Kaplan currently practices at Holcomb Behavioral Health Clinic, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
