Thomas Weinzapfel

MD, FAAP

The American Health Council has cordially appointed Dr. Thomas A. Weinzapfel, MD, FAAP as “Best in Medicine.” Working in the healthcare industry for over 26 years, Dr. Weinzapfel is skilled in the field of Pediatrics.

As a father to eight children, Dr. Weinzapfel became involved in his profession thanks to his love of children and the satisfaction he found in guiding new parents through the early years of their child’s life. He studied Pediatric Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, receiving his MD in 1990, before undertaking a Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Arizona in 1993.

For the past 23 years, Dr. Weinzapfel has been employed as a Pediatrician at St. Mary’s Physicians Group. St. Mary’s is renowned for providing the highest level of quality and safety healthcare services to the Evansville Tri-State area for over 140 years. Today, the St. Mary’s health system encompasses numerous health facilities throughout the Evansville Tri-State area, and is part of a larger statewide health system – St. Vincent and a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic not-for-profit health system. This connection to a larger system means St. Mary’s is able to collaborate nationally with other health systems and stay current on the types of medical care needed to connect to the best local and national providers. St. Mary’s is proud to serve everyone, but pays special attention to poor and vulnerable patients. St. Mary’s Catholic health ministry provides spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities.

Dr. Weinzapfel’s day to day responsibilities include general pediatrics, as well as serving as the Director for the St. Mary’s Sports Concussion Alliance. He has extensive expertise in pediatrics and concussions in sports.

Dr. Weinzapfel attributes his success to the hard work and dedication he puts in every day, as well as his empathy for his patients and their families. Among many accomplishments, he is proud to work hard to bring awareness to the issues of concussions in children and the long-term effects.

Dr. Weinzapfel is proud to be the recipient of The Healthcare Hero Award in 2015 as well as being awarded The Readers Choice in Pediatrics on a number of occasions. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Over the next five years, Dr. Weinzapfel would like to continue his growth in Pediatrics as well as building and becoming a strong advocate for the Concussion Program.

When not at work, Dr. Weinzapfel enjoys spending time with his family as well as golfing and cooking. He also teaches NP/PA and trains medical students.
